Vasectomy

A simple, effective and permanent contraceptive option for men

Stirk Medical Group is now offering vasectomy procedures with Dr Peter MacDonnell.

A vasectomy is a permanent form of contraception that prevents sperm from entering the semen. It is a minimally invasive procedure performed using the no-scalpel technique under local anaesthetic.

What does a vasectomy involve?
The procedure involves making a very small opening in the scrotal skin. The tubes that carry sperm, called the vas deferens, are then cut and sealed to prevent sperm from passing through.

  • Minimally invasive no-scalpel technique
  • Local anaesthetic
  • Procedure takes approximately 30 minutes
  • Appointment time is approximately 45 minutes
  • No general anaesthetic or hospital admission is required

What can I expect afterwards?
Most men recover quickly. You should plan to rest and undertake only light activities for the first 48 hours. Most men are back to their normal strength within approximately one week, although recovery varies between individuals.

You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

Important: Vasectomy is not immediately effective
A vasectomy does not make you sterile immediately. Sperm can remain in the tubes following the procedure.

You must continue using alternative contraception until your post-vasectomy semen analysis confirms sperm clearance. The semen sample is generally performed approximately 16 weeks after the procedure, following around 25–30 ejaculations.

Is vasectomy permanent?
Yes. Vasectomy should be considered a permanent contraceptive procedure. While reversal surgery may be possible, it does not always work.

Will it affect my sex life?
No. A vasectomy does not affect your sex drive, ability to achieve an erection or your ability to ejaculate. Testosterone levels are also not affected by the procedure.

Is vasectomy right for you?
Vasectomy is suitable for men who are confident they do not wish to father children in the future.

Your doctor will discuss the procedure, its benefits, risks and whether it is appropriate for you during your consultation.
